Essex Law Clinic Updates: Summer Term 2019

LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards

The Law Clinic was proud to announce that Catherine Duggan, one of its Student Directors, was nominated for the title of Student of the Year at the annual LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono awards. This is a fantastic achievement and Cat and the Deputy Law Clinic Director Lee Hansen attended the awards ceremony on 1 May 2019 at the Houses of Parliament. Even though Cat didn’t win on the night it was a great honour to be nominated and highlights all the brilliant work that has been undertaken over the past year. Faculty of Humanities Celebrating Excellence Awards

On the 22 May 2019, the Faculty held the Celebrating Excellence Awards, where this year’s theme for the awards was highlighting the achievements of those who demonstrated commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Deputy Director Lee Hansen received the award for setting up the Essex LGBTQIA Rights Clinic project in partnership with OutHouse East. Which provides an avenue to free legal advice to the LGBQIA community. Congratulations Lee!

Outreach Update

Summer Frontrunner Placements

The Clinic has recently advertised and successfully recruited for three Frontrunner positions whom will be in post over the Summer.

Jade, the new Housing Law Frontrunner and Student Director Cat

Jade Hunt will be taking the position as Housing Law Frontrunner carrying out casework and developing a new public legal education project with Beacon House, a charity in Colchester that helps homeless people and those at risk of homelessness.

Patrikas Karpenko has been appointed as Legal Tech Design Frontrunner in order to develop a strategy to use electronic services to enhance the public’s awareness of law, how to access legal services and to guide them through a range of legal processes.

Vinnosh Jaya Kumur will be joining us as Family Frontrunner. Vinney will be undertaking family cases at both outreach and in the clinic. It is hoped that he will also have opportunities to shadow legal advisers.  He will also be writing a Family Handbook, which will be a very practical ‘go-to’ for any students new to family law to help them navigate the system. The handbook will also contain model letters and other resources to enable students to provide the best standard of advice whilst managing an increasing caseload.

Clinic opening hours update

The Essex Law Clinic will not be running any Clinic sessions until the middle of June 2019. After June, there will be limited services over summer. If you require an appointment please email lawclinic@essex.ac.uk
