7 things any prospective Law student shouldn’t miss on their Open Day visit to the Colchester Campus

With this year’s first big Open Day coming up this weekend, our Student Engagement Worker Hazel Jackson takes you through all the sights and sounds any prospective Law student can’t afford to miss when visiting our Colchester campus!

  1. The School of Law

The School of Law is located in the south-east corner of Square 4, close to the Campus Store and Buffalo Joe’s. It’s here you will find the General Office where our friendly Professional Services Team are based, the Essex Law Clinic, as well as the School’s Common Room. You will be spending a lot of time in this part of the campus during your degree, so it’s somewhere you must come and see!

2. Silberrad Student Centre

The Silberrad Student Centre is located next to the lake on Square 5. Within the Learning Hub on the ground floor, there is the IT helpdesk, the Students’ Union Media Centre and Creative Studios and group study pods. On the first floor is the Student Services Hub. This is the place to go if you have any queries about your accommodation, need a replacement registration card, or any advice related to exams or coursework. The second and final floor contains the Reading Room, where there is space for you to study independently.

3. Albert Sloman Library

The Albert Sloman Library is also located on Square 5, next to the Silberrad Student Centre. The library is open 24 hours a day during term time and provides a wide selection of books and journals to help with your assignments, as well as space for you to study in peace. Floor 4 is where the majority of books related to Law can be found, but you can study on any floor you wish.

4. Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall

The Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall (ICLH) is located on Square 5, across from the Albert Sloman Library. This contains two large lecture halls, each with seating for up to 500 students. Lectures and exams are often held here throughout the year and the two halls are combined for the graduation ceremonies.

5. Lecture Theatre Building

The Lecture Theatre Building (LTB) is located south of Square 3. It offers a mix of ten lecture theatres and classrooms. It is also home to Cine10, the on-campus cinema, which often shows the latest blockbusters and classic movies that students love.

6. Accommodation

If you are looking to live away from home, then it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the different accommodation options. These vary in price and standard of luxury from the North and South Towers, which contain a single bed with a shared kitchen and bathrooms shared between 16 students, to the Copse which has single en suite rooms with a kitchen shared with up to 12 other students. Student accommodation is located in a variety of places all over campus.

7. SU Bar

The SU Bar is the largest bar and restaurant on campus. It offers a wide variety of food and drinks, and often holds a number of student events such as pub quizzes and karaoke, as well as playing all the big sporting events live. It is highly unlikely that you will not visit here at least one during your time at the University of Essex.

Bonus. Pebbles the Campus Cat

Pebbles is our resident cat who could turn up pretty much anywhere on campus, at any time! He might be sleeping in the chairs in the Silberrad Student Centre, looking for food outside the Store, sitting in the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall or lazing out in the sunshine in front of the Tony Rich Teaching Centre. If you manage to spot our beloved Pebbles on your Open Day, please feel free to pet him; he loves to meet potential new students!
