Last weekend, we held our extra special Law Ball for the School’s fortieth anniversary! This was held at Colchester Town Hall, with over 100 students, 25 staff members and 15 legal professionals attending. It was a great opportunity for students to get away from their studies and have fun!

The Ball opened with a Drinks Reception in the Mayoral Suite hosted by our Head of School, Professor Karen Hulme. This gave students the opportunity to get a photo taken with our photographer, Simon Rogers, and to speak with the legal professionals we had invited, whilst drinking a glass of prosecco. Professor Karen Hulme gave a speech thanking everyone for attending and talking about the events and celebrations that will be going on throughout 2020 for the School’s fortieth anniversary.

After the speech, students were asked to take their seats in the Moot Hall for a three course meal. Students were sat amongst staff and legal professionals providing them with the opportunity to share their experiences within Law. Everyone enjoyed the meal with complimentary wine and were ready for the speeches to begin!

Colin Moore, our Student Experience Director, introduced speeches from Mohamed Zohiri, President of the Essex Canadian Law Society and Ece Kilicarslan, President of the Essex European Law Students’ Association. The presidents spoke about their events and achievements; promoting students to join their societies to gain legal skills and experience, whilst making friends.
Our very own Professor Maurice Sunkin QC introduced our guest speaker, Dr Tony Fisher from Fisher Jones Greenwood. Tony spoke about what it is like to practice law in the 21st century “at the sharp end” and concluded with a toast to the School of Law’s fortieth anniversary!
The Up & Up played a combination of modern and classic hits to cater to all our guests tastes. It was great to see so many students dancing and singing along to all the tunes until midnight when the carriages awaited.
We really hope that you enjoyed our Law Ball and we look forward to making it even bigger and better next year! If you would like to provide us with any feedback about the event, please email lawhrcevents@essex.ac.uk.
