Hello everyone! My name is Vinnosh Kumar and I have just completed my LLB. I have also recently been elected as the Vice President of Welfare for the University of Essex Student’s Union. I look forward to taking up office for the academic year of 2020-2021. Here, I will be talking about my experience within the Essex Law Clinic and how it inspired me to run for the position of VP Welfare.
I joined the Essex Law Clinic at the beginning of my 1st year. I was thrilled because it was the first time that I was given an opportunity to gain first-hand legal experience and work on cases. After two to three months of training, I had my first case. I was nervous but I enjoyed the interview very much. The experience greatly encouraged me to continue taking cases. I was grateful for receiving a lot of constructive feedback. It only helped me developed my interpersonal skills and case management.
In my 2nd year, I applied for the Essex Frontrunner Plus scheme for family law. I successfully secured the internship and was supervised by Liz. The internship was instrumental for me in gaining client care skills, managing vulnerable clients and writing good letters of advice. I also had the opportunity to shadow a barrister working doing pro bono work. I am happy that I managed to become a Gold Member before I finished my studies.
The aspect of helping people in need (and peer encouragement) inspired me to run for the position of VP Welfare. I attribute a lot of my success in approaching people and having conversations with them to my work at the Law Clinic. The consistent opportunity to step out of my comfort zone was a key factor in my success during the elections. I am humbled and grateful that I won the elections against three strong candidates. I am committed to working closely with the Law Clinic and the School of Law next year. If anyone would like to know more about the Law Clinic or gain any further insight, please do not hesitate to contact me. Other than that, I hope everyone is keeping safe during these unprecedented times.
